The 2018 Pappy Beavan Memorial was filled with a night of memories. Emotions ran high as a great crowd was on hand to honor the legends of the speedway and to watch the new class of inductees who have rightfully earned their spots into Penn Can Speedway's Hall of Fame.
Nick Petrilak made a last lap pass to win his first race of the season. Mike Nagel Jr got the monkey off his back and picked up a big payday for his first win of the year. Dusty Decker claimed top honors for the first event of the Triple Crown Throwdown and Kenny Underwood picked up the bounty in the 4-Cylinder division. Jamie Frantz powered to his 2nd victory in as many weeks, while Shane Wolf Jr was the first across the line in the street stock division. Mason Trautschold made it two-in-a-row the Jr division.
Butch Getz blasted out to a big lead in the Sunoco Racing Fuel distributed by Insinger Performance Modified feature as soon as the green flag fell, leaving Nick Petrilak and Mike Loney to battle for second place. Getz had a multi-car length lead over Petrilak early on and appeared to have checked out on the rest of the field. Loney would try to squeeze underneath Petrilak on multiple laps, but Petrilak would recover and keep his position.
Petrilak slowly got faster as the race the went on, distancing himself Loney. By lap 20, the Greenfield, PA driver had closed in on Getz. Getz still had the power out of the turns however. Whenever Petrilak tried to make a move, Getz was able to shut the door.
Things would heat up in the last final circuits of the modified main. As the two came around on lap 28, Getz left the bottom open just enough for Petrilak to make run underneath. They would touch, as the race for the lead was intense. Petrilak would prevail on the bottom, overtaking the top spot and would hang on for the final lap to claim his first win of 2018. Getz was right there on Petrilak's bumper in 2nd. Mike Loney took home a strong 3rd place finish. Joey Grammes returned to racing action for a solid 4th place finish, driving up from his 7th starting spot. Dan Pompey would round out the top 5.
A nice payday was on the line for 602 Sportsman. Ray Leonard and invader Andrew Smith brought the field down to the green flag. Mike Nagel Jr made in three wide down the front stretch and would eventually power out to the lead ahead of Leonard, Smith and Brokaw.
Nagel had his M7 machine hooked up and credited his performance to a setup he claims wasn't used in his car since about 2008. As Nagel showed the field the quick way around, Smith and Leonard would volley for position, Smith would eventually get by, taking 2nd.
Andrew Smith, the 602 star who made a big 4-hour haul all the way from Lockport, NY to compete for the elevated payday, was doing what he could to run down the leader. Meanwhile, last week's feature winner Michael Schane was on the move from his 8th starting to position. Schane would drive up to 4th and would try to pull Randy Brokaw, but Brokaw stayed smooth and wasn't having any of it.
Trouble happened in turn 2 that saw Tom Creed jump the inside barrier and almost fly into the infield. Creed somehow managed to save the car and drive it off of the wall. A caution was milliseconds from flying, which could have lead to a very interesting restart, however the race remained under green.
As the final few laps ticked off, Smith threw everything he had at Nagel, but Nagel was not to be denied on a night that saw his grandfather, the legend Carl “Bubby” Nagel in attendance to be recognized for his decades of racing blood, sweat and tears. The Nagel family seemed to come full circle Friday night, as Carl joined Mike in victory lane. When the stars come out to shine on a night of legendary proportions, you better believe the name Nagel will be one of the brightest at Penn Can. Smith would have to settle for 2nd. Browkaw, Schane and Matt Brewer would round out the top 5 of the Sunoco Racing Fuel distributed by Insinger Performance 602 A-Main.
Race #1 of the Triple Crown Throwdown was nothing short of side by side full-fender madness. Tommy Groover and Buck Mills Jr raced down turn 4 to the green as the rest of the factory stock field chased behind. Mills would power out to the lead. Behind him, Tommy Groover and Steve Simpson battled for the second position.
After a string of early cautions, Dusty Decker made his charge up to the front from his 5th starting position. Decker set his sights on Mills and went to work, running the bottom of the track to shoot underneath Mills.
A caution would fly again however as Groover was trying to get a run on Mills, but Groover would drive in a little too deep and unintentionally spin Mills in turn 1, collecting Ned Fitch. Groover was regulated to the back for causing the yellow. This put Nate Hill and Steve Simpson on the bumper of Decker.
As racing resumed, Decker would power out to another big lead. Simpson and Hill battled for position, while Mills and Groover would work their way back through the field. Decker hung on to win his 2nd race of the season and win race #1 of the series. Simpson, Groover, Mills and Hill closed out the top 5.
Nick Kennedy was a marked man as a bounty was placed on his head in the 4-Cylinder division. Lee Wagner and Kenny Underwood brought a good group of cars to the green flag and Underwood immediately jumped out front. Joshua Wilder and Chris Taylor would follow and try to reel him in. Unfortunately, a caution would come out soon after the start for Wilder, as his transmission would expire.
Racing resumed with Underwood showing the quick way around, but it wouldn't take long for Captain Quick himself to make his way up front. Nick Kennedy was on the move from his 8th starting position and in a hurry! Kennedy gave Underwood everything he had, but wasn't able to completely get around the canny veteran. Underwood would hold to not only claim a big payday, but also the 99th victory of his career. Kennedy would finish 2nd directly on Underwood's bumper. Chris Taylor secured a solid 3rd place finish, Mike Farris 4th and Brian Salmini 5th.
Jamie Frantz took home top honors in the American Racer 600cc Modified division, making this win his second in a row. Frantz powered out to a big lead from his pole starting position and never looked back. Jarred Green and Doug Lattner did what they could to chase him down, but Frantz proved too much to handle. Green, Lattner, Paul Deruyter and Ali Scutt rounded out the top 5.
In what would be a somewhat controversial ending to the Sunoco Racing Fuel distributed by Insinger Performance street stock feature, on an otherwise positive night of racing, Shane Wolf Jr would be in the right place at the right time to pick up a win on legend's night. Doug Polhamus, Steve Polhamus and George Miller would finish behind in that order. Eric Boyton had mechanical issues and was unable to start the feature.
Mason Trautschold would win the Jr Modified feature event. Joshua Landers and Trevor Houghton were 2 and 3 respectively.
During intermission, Alan Rudalavage made a pass down the front stretch, spreading ashes along his way in remembrance of the great Dan Wesley. This kicked off a fantastic ceremony for the 2018 Hall of Fame inductees.
